Henry Hudson Trail Ride w/ friends from Princeton Ski Club

I wanted to pass along this invitation from our friends at the Princeton Ski Club and MARS (Metropolitan Area Recumbent Society) for a short, friendly ride with lunch along the Henry Hudson Trail. This ride will meet up at 10:45 AM and start rolling at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015. There will likely be a full range of cycle types and everyone is welcome to ride. For more information, please see this Princeton Ski Club brochure. Below is the description from ride leader Steve:

Riders,

There’s still plenty of nice weather left for biking, so let’s meet in Freehold for our final ride of the season and head north along the Henry Hudson rail trail. This is a good opportunity for those of you in Monmouth County to try one of our rides. We’ll be doing the southern portion of the trail, which is paved and should be suitable for all bikes. This trail segment is about 6 miles long, but there’s the option of extending the ride by continuing further north to the next trail segment. Lunch will be on Rt. 520 near the intersection of Rt. 79, where there are several places to eat.

As usual, we’ll meet at 10:45 AM and plan to start riding around 11. The starting point is at the parking lot for the Monmouth County Sheriff’s office and Care Center, which I think is also known as the John Montgomery Care Center, located at around 115 Dutch Lane Rd. in Freehold [geo coord. map link = 40.270722, -74.259177]. Directions to the Freehold parking lot are on the attached brochure:
http://co.monmouth.nj.us/documents/130/hht_brochure_august_2014.pdf

For those of you who are new, I’ll be the guy with a long red recumbent bike or yellow tandem recumbent.
Steve

I look forward to riding with you soon!

2015 Season Wrap Up

I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the riders who joined us on our 2015 Delaware Valley Trike Riders’ Club rides. Your companionship on the trails this past year was a welcome change to all of the solo rides I’d taken previously.

This past year, 2015, we offered several rides throughout our local region in an attempt to meet as many of our members as we could on their “home trails” – or as close as we could. Things didn’t always work out as planned, but we did get to experience many more trails than we would have without you in mind. We also made some new friends among other biking groups, both the Metro Area Recumbent Society and the Princeton Ski Club were great companions.

For the remainder of this year I’ll likely offer to lead a few ad hoc rides on days when good weather is predicted and if the roads are passible, I’ll be heading out for a Winter Solstice Ride on Tues. December 22, 2015. Odd Sunday Sundae Rides will resume after the 2016 Spring thaw (I’m still riding these interval-sprints but just closer to home).

If you have any ideas or requests for club rides for next year please pass them along now so that we can set a calendar to look forward to.

I look forward to riding again with you soon!

Upcoming Club and Non-Club Rides

Hi, I’d like to take this opportunity to share some dates of interest with the Delaware Valley Trike Riders’ Club members and others regarding some upcoming club rides and rides sponsored by other groups you may find of interest.

If you are a fan of riding the Perkiomen Trail, I encourage you to consider riding the northern section to the Green Lane Park amphitheater on Saturday, September 26, 2015, from 11 AM to 3 PM, where the Pennsylvania Audubon society, will be celebrating “Bird Town” in honor of John J. Audubon. This event is free and filled with information on how you and your hometown can choose natural and native green designs for habitats that will support both local resident birds as well as make inviting sanctuaries for migrating birds. This is an excellent family riding opportunity for the whole family with plenty of activities for young children! For more information see: http://pa.audubon.org/bird-town.

The Odd Sunday Sundae Ride, also known as the “Exercise in Futility” ride will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2015, starting at 8:30 AM. This is a cardio-challenge interval sprint-training ride of about 30 miles, making use of the D&R trail and Rte. 29, from north Lambertville NJ to Frenchtown and back. The “futility” is directly correlated with the amount of ice-cream you eat while in Frenchtown.

The Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) once again will hold their 5-day Tour de Pines rides (Septembrer 30 through October 4). Each day a different route, typically 45 to 50 miles in length, will be led through various areas of the NJ Pinelands. The Delaware Valley Trike Riders Club will be joining the PPA on the final day’s tour, on October 4, 2015, which offers two routes sharing a common map – one being a 27-mile ride, the other a 45-mile ride. Both rides start at the same location, share the same lunch stop (pack your own lunch) and end where they started. Registration for the whole Tour, or just for one ride is only $40.00 ($36.00 for PPA members). Please see Tour de Pines Bicycle Tour for details and registration information. All proceeds go to protecting and preserving this wonderful natural parkland.

More information will be posted as these events draw nearer.

I look forward to riding with you!

Odd Sunday Sundae Rides

I want to extend an invitation to our Delaware Valley Trike Riders’ Club members and our other cycling friends and family to join an informal and nearly bi-weekly cardio-training* ride, beginning Sunday, August 9, 2015, from Lambertville, NJ to Frenchtown, NJ and back. On odd-dated Sundays I’m moving my training ride to this location. Making use of both the D&R trail and Rte. 29, the total route is about 30 miles long, moving at a baseline pace between 11 and 13 MPH (on the gravel surface**), the ride is often punctuated with higher-speed sprints throughout. Speeds on the highway will be somewhat faster. During August, this ride begins at 8:00 AM.

*Note: This is not a leisurely ride. This ride is meant to produce a cardio challenge resulting in increased heart rate, lots of sweat and overall fatigue while increasing strength and stamina.
**Note: Riding on gravel requires about 20% more energy than riding on a smoothly paved surface.

Warning: Consultation with your trusted physician should be seriously considered before attempting this strenuous exercise activity.

I will be taking a brief rest break in Frenchtown, snacking at Maria’s Cafe, before returning.

This will be a regularly scheduled ride that I hope you can participate in. The only times that this ride will be canceled will be when the date conflicts with one of our monthly club rides or if the weather is bad.

Registration is not necessary but it is encouraged. If I know you are coming and you are running a few minutes late, I’ll wait.

Start Location Details:
Parking is available in a small lot located on River Road, a couple hundred feet south from the Rte. 202 exit for Rte. 29, for “Lambertville & Stockton.” This is the first exit when crossing the Delaware River from PA into NJ, the last exit in NJ before crossing into PA.
Geo Location: 40.380023, -74.951699

I look forward to riding with with you.
