Tour de Pines 2016

This is a short notice to Delaware Valley Trike Riders and our other cycling friends about the upcoming 2016 Pinelands Preservation Alliance Tour de Pines bike rides scheduled for September 28 through October 2. Each day a different ride, between 45-53 miles each, is offered. These rides take you through several historic towns and through miles of beautiful pine forests. Shorter rides of 22-27 miles are offered Sep. 28th, and Oct. 1st and 2nd. All rides travel nearly flat and very bike friendly roads.

Downloadable GPS files and paper cue sheets are provided. Riders are responsible for their own transportation, food and lodging. All rides start at 9:00 AM.

A Chili & Beer post-tour celebration will be held at PPA’s headquarters. Free to all registered riders, or $10 for others.

Your registration fees, for a single, multiple or full week of rides, goes directly to supporting the important efforts of the Pinelands Preservation Alliance.

If you can’t make the cycle trip, the Pinelands Preservation Alliance offers several guided tours and hikes through various forest areas and each is lead by a very experienced guide.

46 mile South Jersey Ride

Hi Everyone, I’m happy to share this ride announcement from our fellow recumbent trike rider and club member, Mike Broennle. It sounds like a great morning ride on very bike friendly roads… and the weather should be perfect! This ride is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Bicycle Club. I hope you can make it!

Here’s the message from Mike:

Hello DelValTrikers,

I would like to invite you to join me this Saturday, May 15 for a 46 mi ride in South Jersey from Newport, crossing the Maurice River, to Woodbine NJ, then return via the same flat roads. While I have not ridden this route, my friend Woody who planned it, tells me the roads are either quiet, bike friendly or have wide shoulders. This is the shortest of 3 routes offered on the Bonkers Tour, a lightly supported ride put on by the Delaware Valley Bicycle Club. The $10 fee is to cover sag support. Cue sheet may be printed out at http://dvbc.org/event/40th-annual-bonkers-tour/  Onsite registration also available at the same price.
The weather report this am calls for afternoon rain. I plan to decide whether to eat lunch in Woodbine or return immediately depending on the forecast on Saturday.
Flat roads in a quiet area of southern NJ not far from the Delaware Bay.
Ride begins at 9 am. Arrive by 8:40 am. Sag support till 3 or 4 pm. (I doubt sag service can bring you and your trike back to the start)
Please let me know if you plan to join me.
This is a road ride so bring your tail lights & flags.

Mike Broennle

Hazon Philadelphia’s “Ride the Pines” Event

I would like to invite other Delaware Valley Trike Riders to join me at the Hazon “Ride the Pines” bike tour, Sunday, May 31, 2015 (check-in begins at 7:00 AM). Detailed registration information and schedules are available at: http://hazon.org/calendar/philly-bike-ride-2/
Please note: There are a limited number of open registrations available, so act quickly if you intend to join this ride event.

In summary, this ride event offers 19-, 42- and 65-mile routes starting and ending at the JCC Camps in Medford, NJ. Each of the rides, escorted by a knowledgable ride leader and sweeper, will pass through pine forests, farmland and local villages. While this ride is not a “trike specific” ride, the flat terrain of the NJ Pinelands will provide trike and recumbent riders miles of peddling fun!

This day-long event (ending at 4:00 PM) offers a light breakfast during check-in, mobile SAG, fully supported rest stops (snacks, water, loo and shade), a catered, kosher barbecue lunch and vegan/vegetarian meals as well. Afternoon activities will include a collection of local vendors offering a marketplace of sustainable, Earth-friendly goods. Additional activities are planned to keep young children entertained (while accompanied by a parent) at the camp during the ride and a child-centered environmental educational program will be available in the afternoon. Other activities, that include swimming and boating are also available (but may incur additional fees). Please contact Hazon for details.

I hope you can join me and I look forward to riding with you soon!
Wayne K

P.S. If you do join this event, please drop me a note… I’ll be on the 42-mile route.

Recumbent Trike Riders Wanted!

I’d like to extend an invitation to other Recumbent Trike Riders in the Delaware Valley, S.E. Pennsylvania, Central, Southern and Coastal New Jersey, and elsewhere, to join with me in forming a group that will fulfill the Trike Rider’s goals just like those groups who support DF riders. What goals are these? Here are a few of mine:
• Meet new people
• Ride new routes for fun and for challenge
• Offer group clinics for maintenance, safety, commuting, touring, etc.
• Charter portage for longer one-way trips
• Share tips, techniques and technology to enhance our rides

Our region is home to hundreds of miles of high quality trails and roadways that are ideal for recumbent trike riders and riding these with a group can only enhance the fun. There is no fee to join other than your interest and maybe a little sweat equity to help plan, organize or lead a ride along your favorite trail.

Please contact me via a “comment” to this site if you are interested in helping to form our Trike Riders group, to lead rides, to join rides or to contribute to a list of suitable routes. I hope that we can form a core group who will help to create our “Club” this winter of 2014/2015 and be ready to offer new group rides this spring (and maybe take few rides on suitable winter days too).

I’ll be adding a Club Calendar and an archive library of ride tip sheets soon. Please “Follow” this blog to receive notices of updates.
