Club Ride: Lower Perkiomen Trail with Lunch

Reaching out to our Delaware Valley Trike Riders’ Club members from our more “western” regions, I would like to invite you to join our next club ride on Saturday, July 18, 2015 (starting at 10:30 AM, sharp). Beginning in Lower Perkiomen Valley Park, we will follow the Perkiomen Trail north to Schwenksville where we will take a break to stretch and grab a quick slice at Ortino’s Restaurant before turning around and heading back.

Note: If there is interest in joining this ride on a future Sunday, please let me know and we will add it to our schedule.

Please Register your intent to ride via email, phone or a comment to this post, by 8:00 PM, Thursday, July 16, 2015. This is a fair-weather event and trail conditions may be affected by heavy rain within 24 hours prior to ride. Please include your phone number with your registration (it will remain protected). If Ride Is Canceled, I will call you, or text you if you prefer, between 6:00 and 6:30 AM on the day of the ride (sooner if conditions are clearly dreadful).

Key Points:
Arrive early – After a brief introduction the Ride Starts at 10:30 AM, sharp, Saturday, July 18, 2015. This is about a 22 mile round trip, and is mostly flat. Average speed: 11 MPH (faster speeds possible when on paved surfaces). The Perkiomen Trail provides mixed surfaces, crosses a few small roads and provides several miles of tree-shaded travel following the stream. No one left behind and we will stop for breakdowns. Restroom opportunities are available at our start and turnaround points as well as in Collegeville. Ortino’s is a well regarded Italian Food and Pizza shop that is located about 50 feet from the trail. A picnic style lunch is also possible on the shaded, nearby trail.

Please bring a lock and cable for a group lock-up during lunch. Also, please familiarize yourself with Preparation Guidelines and Rules for Club Rides. Trip Sheet and Map are available (but you likely won’t need it for this ride).

Cautionary Note:
This is a summer season ride so please prepare for yourself accordingly: adequate hydration, snacks, and protection from the sun.

Geo-Coordinates:
Lower Perkiomen Valley Park: 40.131151, -75.446247
Ortino’s Restaurant in Schwenksville: 40.260804, -75.464627

As always, all members are encouraged to lead a ride on your favorite trail, or if you are looking for some company to test yourself on a challenging route, there are Delaware Valley Trike Riders ready to join you!

I look forward to riding with you soon!

Re-cap: Memorial Day Ride 2015

The Delaware Valley Trike Riders’ Club was joined by our friends, members of the MARS (Metropolitan Area Recumbent Society) recumbent riders’ club, on a beautiful Memorial Day morning ride (May 25). Setting out from Morrisville, we followed the D & L towpath to the cemetery at Washington Crossing Park where about 60 soldiers of the Continental Line were interred.

After paying our respects, we regrouped and headed south, stopping in Yardley for a quick bagel brunch and some shared laughs before returning to Morrisville to say our goodbye’s.

During this ride along the mostly shaded canal we passed dozens of geese with down-covered young goslings, several blue heron, and several species of turtles, red bellied (threatened), bog (endangered), snapping and box turtles.

Upcoming rides will continue to be announced and we hope that you can join us.
Remember, if you would like to lead a ride, or suggest a future ride, please feel free to do so.

I look forward to riding with you soon!

French Creek Iron Tour 2015

Sharing this short note from club member Jay…

Would anyone like to do the French Creek Iron tour with me? I did it last year and it was great! Now true it is a quite hilly, but if you trained during the winter (think spin bike and stair master) you will be fine. I did the 50 mile option last year and would like to do it again, and company would b nice. I was the only trike rider there last year.

[edit by Wayne K] If you are interested in joining Jay, on June 14, 2015, please contact him via email (he is on the “Members” page). Information about: The French Creek Iron Tour.

Trike Rider Survey & Ride Leader Shout-out

The Delaware Valley Trike Riders are putting together several group rides but we need your input. In order to design rides that will keep you happy and coming back we need to know a few things about your expectations and current riding abilities.

Please use this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HGW5TC6 to complete a brief 10 question survey. Respondents shall be kept anonymous but we will post the results so that future ride leaders can use them to guide their efforts. The 5 or so minutes you invest in this will be very helpful to us.

About half of the people who have contacted me have not “followed” this website and have only contacted me via email. In order to be sure I’ve contacted everyone (and until everyone has “followed” the site to receive updates) I will be sending email invitations also. If you receive this wordpress update notice and an email from me – I apologize for the duplication. This shouldn’t be a problem much longer.

If you would be interested in leading a ride along one of your favorite trails, please let me know (you can email me directly or use the comment feature). After ride leaders have been identified, I would like to convene a brief meeting (over breakfast or lunch, or online via google hangouts or similar service) so that we can introduce ourselves and share ideas on how best to move this club forward so that we can start riding as a group.

I hope you all can continue to enjoy this holiday weekend and I look forward to riding with you!
Wayne K

P.S. Please continue to share news of our club, The Delaware Valley Trike Riders, with other trike riders, dealers and mechanics in our area – Thank you!

Welcome to the Delaware Valley Trike Riders’ Club & Blog

Recumbent Trike Riders Wanted!

I’d like to extend an invitation to other Recumbent Trike Riders in the Delaware Valley, S.E. Pennsylvania, Central, Southern and Coastal New Jersey, and elsewhere, to join with me in forming a group that will fulfill the Trike Rider’s goals just like those groups who support DF riders. What goals are these? Here are a few of mine:
• Meet new people
• Ride new routes for fun and for challenge
• Offer group clinics for maintenance, safety, commuting, touring, etc.
• Charter portage for longer one-way trips
• Share tips, techniques and technology to enhance our rides

Our region is home to hundreds of miles of high quality trails and roadways that are ideal for recumbent trike riders and riding these with a group can only enhance the fun. There is no fee to join other than your interest and maybe a little sweat equity to help plan, organize or lead a ride along your favorite trail.

Please contact me via a “comment” to this site if you are interested in helping to form our Trike Riders group, to lead rides, to join rides or to contribute to a list of suitable routes. I hope that we can form a core group who will help to create our “Club” this winter of 2014/2015 and be ready to offer new group rides this spring (and maybe take few rides on suitable winter days too).

I’ll be adding a Club Calendar and an archive library of ride tip sheets soon. Please “Follow” this blog to receive notices of updates.
